La Semilla Atentica

In March 2008 we completed Part I of our permaculture community outreach program,
La Semilla Atentica. The project benefits the people of Arizona. Arizona, a mestizo
village in Belize, C.A. was recently settled by refugees who were twice removed from
their land. Once from El Salvador, because of war and overpopulation, and again by
corporate force. The project was sponsored in part by St. Luke's Episcopal church of
Boone, NC and a group of students from Galen University along with STAND center staff
volunteered their time to help carry out this project. Part II will begin in September 2008.

La Semilla Atentica (The Authentic Seed) will consists of:

STAND Center for experiential learning is a
research and development Center, nestled into the
heart of the rain forest, that focuses on practicing
and promoting sustainable development from a
grassroots level. We design high quality
interactive field courses, work service programs
and outreach programs to mutually benefit local
Central Americans and international students and
volunteers. We also provide authentic and unique
eco-tourism services for those who wish to
experience Belize in a way that both minimizes
impacts on and actively benefits the cultures and
the native ecosystems of this Central American
jewel.

Arizona Community Preschool

In February 2008, our community preschool was founded by Andrea Acker in
concert with the community of Arizona. The goal of the school is to teach children
basic preschool skills using the Montessori method, along with non traditional
skills like gardening and practical life skills as well as giving them an introduction
to cooperative learning. To find out more click the above link.
Our mission is for the STAND
Center to act as a catalyst for
positive global change through
the mediums of interactive
education, voluntourism and  the
application of sustainable
community development models.
We envision an earth covered by
stacked poly-culture forests of
food where once only endless
fields of mono-cropped beans
and corn stood in bland rows....
